HOW IT TESTED:
With the O3 Speedport Black, Prince is putting its Speedport technology into a more player-oriented frame. The large, rectangular, grommetless string holes—Speedports—reduce wind drag, helping to increase swing speed. They also allow the strings to move more freely on impact, which increases the sweet spot and delivers a soft, damp feel. There’s plenty of controllable pop in the Black and playtesters remarked favorably about its effectiveness from both the baseline and at net. But unlike previous O3 racquets, you can customize the feel and forgiveness of the Black with the Speedport Tuning System. The racquet comes with string-hole inserts (grommets, basically) that can be placed in the ports, increasing stability and giving you a more traditional, crisper feel. Indeed, the string holes stiffen the string bed and take away some of its forgiveness. It’s the more demanding way to play with the racquet, but if you prefer a classic response from your frame, the inserts are a nice option.
BOTTOM LINE:
A solid addition for aggressive all-courters and high-level doubles specialists.
