Volkl Power Bridge 4 Tennis Racquet

Volkl Powerbridge 4 Tennis Racquet

Tennis Magazine's Review
April 2009

How it tested: For a racquet that’s just over half an inch longer than most, the Power Bridge 4 is surprisingly maneuverable. That’s because of the light weight and head-light balance. It’s even nimble at the net where the added length helps on stretch volleys and overheads. And it’s easy to generate good swing speed, which you’ll need because the frame is not overly powerful. You can take a sizeable cut without too much worry that you’ll hit the back fence. In fact, some playtesters felt the frame would perform better with a little more pop. The Power Bridge (strong carbon fibers at the bottom of the racquet face) provides decent stability for a lightweight frame, as long as you’re not far from the sweet spot. The technology was most noticeable to testers at net. When in position they could stick their volleys, but if they hit a well-struck passing shot off-center, it was trouble.

Playtester comments: “Could be really aggressive with serves”; “Felt comfortable at the baseline and the net”; “Didn’t feel like the racquet could handle much heat at the net.”

Bottom line: If you strike a good ball, but Father Time is slowing down your swing, this racquet can help.

In addition to the new Powerbridge technology, this racket also utilizes the proven Catapult effect from Völkl Tennis. It provides the Powerbridge 4 with additional ball control and a larger sweet spot, and permits greater ball acceleration. Thanks to Powerbridge, the racket’s balance of dynamism, control and comfort is now complemented by an extra serving of power and stability. A perfect racquet for all-round players.

How does Powerbridge work?

The secret of POWERBRIDGE lies in two components. The first is the tried-and-tested DNX technology, which is now being used in the bridge of the racket head for the first time. Second, the designers at Völkl Tennis have succeeded in reducing the cross-section of the bridge without losing stability. The quantity of expansion resin which functions as the binding agent to bond the yoke to the rest of the frame to form a unit remains completely unchanged here. The only difference is the higher compaction of the matrix. In conjunction with the power features of DNX this compression produces an enormously solid composite material which optimizes the heart of the racket, thereby investing the entire racket with more power.
