Head Flexpoint 4 Tennis Racquet Review
Our Review
The Head Flexpoint 4 Tennis Racquet is the 2005 update of the Head Liquid Metal 4 that won a 2003 Tennis Magazine Editors’ Choice award. It’s an excellent choice for Intermediates seeking an “equalizer racquet” that can produce bigger shots with shorter strokes. The reason for the update is the addition of Head’s unique Flexpoint frame. The Flexpoint design allows the racquet head to cup the ball on impact. This cupping action enhances feel, spin and control. There is also more power in this 2005 update. The Flexpoint 4 has an oversize 107 inch head in place of the Liquid Metal 4’s 102 midplus head. With the improved control, perhaps Head felt they could build in more power without compromising their design goals for this frame. In play testing, the Flexpoint 4 stood out for its good lateral placement on serves, overheads, groundstrokes and volleys. This racquet does more than produce powerful shots. It has a noticeable advantage in helping players put powerful shots where they want them to go.
Unlike almost all of the other Flexpoint, (Wilson) nCode, and (Dunlop) M-Fil frames, the Flexpoint 4 hits with a firm feel that has more feedback than damping. Even firmer and less damped than the more powerful Flexpoint 10.
The Flexpoint 4 also swings heavier than some of its specifications might suggest. The heavy swing translates into great stability. The downside is the adverse effect on reaction shots. If you’re looking for something light and quick with at least as much power, consider the Head Liquid Metal 8 or Wilson nCode n5 110. The Flexpoint 4 is less of a game improvement racquet. It’s more of a power racquet for competitive players with 3.5 – 4.5 skills. Even though it’s as powerful as some popular game improvement frames, it distinguishes itself with an edge in precision and stability.
