Head Microgel
Radical Pro Racquet Review
Head designed the Microgel Radical Pro especially for aggressive hitters seeking a lively MP frame that still feels like a players' racquet. Many manufacturers – including Head – use the Pro or Tour affix to identify a special edition frame that is more suited to advanced players.
The Head Microgel Radical Pro is actually a completely different racquet that shares relatively few specifications or playing characteristics with the other racquets in the Radical family. The only commonality are the graphics and Head's new Microgel frame technology.
The Pro version is most like a traditional players' frame that has been hot rodded for power without going so far as to sacrifice feel or stability. Most of the hot rodding is in the head. The head is distinctively shaped as well as being slightly larger than the Head Microgel Radical MP (98). Head uses a more open string 16x19 string pattern to make the string bed more lively and more spin friendly.
Otherwise, the Head Microgel Radical Pro leans toward traditional more than modern. The frame hits with a delicious flex and feedback that will delight those who love the classic response of a players' frame. In motion, the weight and pronounced head light balance provides excellent stability. On the court, our intermediate play testers praised the Head Microgel Radical Pro for its solid feel and consistently comfortable delivery.
Many of our intermediate play testers preferred the Pro's friendlier and livelier feel to the lighter MP (98) version. although we'll continue o recommend the MP (98) or OS for most advanced players and competitive juniors. The more aggressive intermediate and advanced hitters in the play test group strongly preferred string tensions in the upper half of the recommended range.
The Head Microgel Radical Pro lands on a sweet combination of performance characteristics for players who don't want to sacrifice the comfort and stability of a traditional players' frame to go to a more powerful 'tweener racquet. The Pro reaches for as much power as it can without trading away the classic feel of a traditional players' frame.
